10,000 Lux: A Gross Misrepresentation

For years, I've been frustrated with the outdated marketing claims of lighting for Seasonal Affective Disorder (SAD). The typical claim from "happy" lamp manufacturers is that 10,000 lux is necessary to mitigate SAD. This was based on research studies performed in the 80s and 90s.

The problem is that 10,000 lux is extremely bright indoors, and small, intense light sources create uncomfortable glare. Worse, to actually get 10,000 lux, you need to position the most popular SAD lamp six inches from your eyes and sit there for 20 minutes.

In the 40 years since the original SAD lamp study, numerous studies have confirmed that it's not the total intensity of light that is important for your circadian rhythm, but rather the intensity of the blue and green components of white light. With proper spectral engineering, you can comfortably use a less intense light source for much longer and still get the same benefit.

Below is the spectrum of a typical "happy" lamp. The gray region is the melanopic response, which is light that stimulates the circadian rhythm. Note that the SAD light spectrum dips in the blue-green melanopic region of about 460 to 520 nm:

And following is the daytime spectrum of the Atmos lamp. Notice how the blue-green melanopic dip has been flattened out. Because there is more blue content, you can lower the intensity of the light and still get the same circadian stimulation:
